Queen's Wins League Opener over RMC
Queen's 68 RMC 53
By Dave Wilson
We knew this would be a tough game going in - RMC is a much improved ball club, including the addition of former Gael, Sharlene (Miles) Harding (94-96). We got off to a reasonable start, holding RMC scoreless for the first few minutes, but only able to score 8 points of our own. We finished the first quarter up 15-6. In the second quarter, however, RMC executed better and we were a little cold shooting and a little slow to the defensive boards. By half time our lead was cut to 3, 23-20. Brittany Moore (Hannon, ON) led all scorers with 9 points, but was only 1 of 5 from behind the arc. Jill Wheat (Marwayne, AB) was a force on the offensive glass, pulling down 6.
The third quarter opened with Moore dropping 3 consecutive 3-point shots and a 2 pointer. She scored 11 points in less than 2 minutes to open up a 14 point lead - a lead that would be stretched to 19 later in the quarter. We outscored RMC 25-12 in the third and then traded baskets for the fourth quarter to end with a 68-53 win. Moore finished with 25 points on 5 of 11 from 3-point land. Erin Skippon (Kelowna, BC) finished with a team high 7 boards.
