Gaels rookies 'sting' Concordia
Queen's 81, Concordia 75

By Dave Wilson

Here's the background to this story: we scored 53 points against the Bishop's Gaitors on Friday, 64 points against the UQAM Citadins on Saturday and 57 points against the Concordia Stingers on Sunday ..... in the second half. I wish I could attribute it to a great half-time speech, but that would be stealing from a great team effort, spear-headed by two first-year players, Alaina Porter and Brittany Moore.

Teddi Firmi remained on the sidelines to rest her injury (knees) providing the opportunity for Moore to start her second consecutive game at point guard. We struggled as a team to find any kind of rhythm in the first half. Our shooting was marginal - 33% from the floor (11-33), quite solid from behind the 3-point arc - 40% (2-5 both by Moore), and non-existent (0-2) from the foul line. Still having difficulty controlling the boards, we were at least even at 23 in that category, but trailed on the scoreboard 24-27.

The second half was a much different story -- both teams pressed sporadically - Concordia converting quickly on a couple of turnovers to maintain a 4 to 6 point cushion throughout the third quarter. A couple of steals by Queen's led to points that narrowed the gap - and then Porter got loose! After going 0 for 2 in the first half, she went 6 for 6 from the field, and 6 for 7 from the foul line to score a team high 18 points (all in the second half). Moore continued to shoot the ball extremely well going 4 for 5 from beyond the arc and 2 for 3 from 2-point land to finish with 16 points. Sarah Barnes added 11 points, while Maddie Soye recorded a career high 10 rebounds. Overall the team shot 70% in the second half - primarily on layups that resulted from a tough defense that forced 21 turnovers.
