Queen's 52 vs Laval 63
By Dave Wilson
This was a good battle. Not too many people would have expected us to compete with Laval as we did - they have a 5-5" point guard (sr. national team member) and then the rest of their lineup is 5-11" or better, including 2 more national team members. Our players were not intimidated and started the game quite well on the offensive end of the floor, but couldn't stop Laval on defense. Laval led 19-17 after the first quarter. The second quarter, however, was much different. Our defense improved, holding Laval to 13 points, but we could not find the hoop and managed only 4 points to trail 31-21 at the break. Brittany Moore (Hannon, ON) returned to her fine shooting form, dropping 13 at the break on 3 of 6 from beyond the 3 point stripe.
We came out strong in the third quarter and cut the lead to as little as 6 points, only to have Laval bounce back and regain the double digit lead. We outscored them by one in the quarter, 19-18, but still trailed by 10 heading into the fourth. Much the same as in the third, both teams made runs to increase/decrease the margin in the fourth. Laval regained their 11 point margin by the end of the game, outscoring us 13-12 in the quarter to win 63-52. Moore continued with the hot hand, finishing with 22 points on 6 of 10 from the 3-point line and was named to the tournament all-star team. Anne Murphy (Milford, ON) grabbed 10 points and 7 boards.
