Queen's 62 vs St. Francis Xavier 60
By Dave Wilson

This was a different style basketball game than you usually see. Not only did X press for 40 minutes of the game, they pressed on turnovers and missed shots. It made for a very disjointed, scrambled game - one that tested our ability to remain calm and collected in the frantic style of play. I can't say we accomplished that goal, although our composure in the last 3 to 4 minutes of the game was pretty good. X outscored us 18 to 10 in the first quarter as we tried to withstand the barrage of pressure. We settled a little more in the second quarter, outscoring them 14-11 to trail 29-24 at the half. Alaina Porter (Burlington, ON) led our team in scoring with 7 points & 4 boards, while Erin Skippon (Kelowna, BC) had 6 points and 4 boards. Maddie Soye led all rebounders with 5.

While we were not great to start the third quarter, we did not suffer the brutal play that plagued us last week in Halifax. Each team scored 18 in the quarter to leave our deficit at 4 heading into the fourth. X maintained their lead throughout the quarter, at one point stretching their lead to double digits. With just under 5 minutes to go in the game a slow shift in the momentum began to occur, buoyed by some good shooting on our part and shots not falling for X. With just under 2 minutes to play we grabbed our first lead of the game and never relinquished it. Making our foul shots down the stretch we increased our lead to 4, before X scored on the buzzer to make the final 62-60.

Porter finished the game with 17 points and 7 boards, while Skip garnered a double-double, 11 points and 11 boards. Anne Murphy (Milford, ON) also reached double digits with 10 boards.
