Hawks over Gaels in Overtime
Queen's 62, Laurier 68
By Dave Wilson
We had a good start to the ball game, effectively limiting Laurier's offense, while finding the bottom of the net ourselves. By the end of the first quarter, we had built a respectable 19-11 lead. All that changed in the second quarter, however, as turnovers and abysmal shooting prevailed. While we again held Laurier to 11 points in the quarter, we managed a paltry 6 of our own. The third quarter saw our defense dissolve as Laurier continued to attack the hoop and we continued to foul. We gave up more points (24) in that quarter than Laurier had amassed in the entire first half. Our 25-22 half time lead was now a 40-46 deficit. Three minutes into the fourth quarter, our deficit grew to 10 points, before the final seven minutes of regulation saw us climb our way back into the game. A Jaime Dale tough lay up with 3.2 seconds on the clock tied the game at 59, sending it to overtime. Shooting woes plagued us (again) in the overtime as we were outscored 9-3.
Sarah Barnes dropped 15 points, while Anne Murphy and Dale each had 11. Dale also added 8 assists and 4 steals.
