Lakehead's early start never overcome - Gaels lose 72-62
By Dave Wilson
We made the flight to Thunder Bay on Thursday evening, had a good film session Friday morning, followed by a good walk-through (shooting) practice. I thought we were ready to play. Lakehead, playing at home for the first time in league play this season came out on fire. They drained three 3s, and scored at will inside as well. With 6:35 showing on the clock they had already put up 17 points - if my math is correct (and I would not count on that), they were on pace for a 194 point game. Following a time-out, the game became a little more "normal" as we held them to 5 points the rest of the quarter and trailed 22-17 after one. In the second quarter we fell behind in double digits, but pulled it back to 7 points at the half, 36-29. Brittany Moore (Hannon, ON) had 12 points and 4 boards at the break. In the third quarter some sloppy play saw us fall behind in double digits again - and again we brought it back to 7, trailing 52-45. In the fourth, once again we fell behind, this time by 17, before we started to rally. We closed to within 2 points with just over a minute to play, only to have Lakehead come down and hit back to back 3s to ice the game, 72-62. Moore finished with 21 points, while Anne Murphy (Milford, ON) had 10 points and 6 boards.
