Late game execution leads to come-from-behind win
Queen's 69, Windsor 65
By Dave Wilson
In a reversal from yesterday's game, we opened the game very well against a very talented Windsor squad, grabbing a quick 10-0 lead. It wasn't to last, however, as Windsor clawed back and stiffened their defense. They outscored us 9-6 the rest of the quarter, leaving us with a 16-9 lead after one. The second quarter was a reversal as Windsor took advantage of their size and tenacity on the boards to outscore us 17-10 in the quarter (including a 3-pointer at the buzzer) to tie the game at the half. Our shooting woes continued, converting only 9 of 34 for a whopping 26.5%. We were out-rebounded 38-18. A slow start to the second half put us down four early, only to claw back to within one at the end of the third quarter, 48-47. Three minutes into the fourth quarter, a soft stretch of defense (and transition) saw us fall to an 8 point deficit. A "chip-away" style of play pulled us to within 2 with 2 minutes to play, 65-63. Consecutive set plays for Sarah Barnes (freed up by screens courtesy of Anne Murphy) led to four straight points and our first lead of the half. Excellent defense prevented Windsor from any good looks, forcing them to foul with less than 10 seconds on the clock. Teddi Firmi drained both free throws to lock up the win.
Murphy continued her stellar play with 17 points and 6 rebounds, while Barnesy came through in the clutch (again) to finish with 15 points. Rookie Christine Wallace had a great second half to finish 11 points and 6 critical rebounds.
