Queen's 62 vs Cape Breton U. 82
(at Dalhousie Tournament)

By Dave Wilson

Our first CIS exhibition game proved a little more than we were capable of handling at this point in the young season, however there were some promising moments. CBU used their fast-paced style of play, combined with a relentless pounding of the offensive glass to get out to a quick lead and never looked back. They rolled up 19 points by the end of the first quarter, while we managed a meager 8. The second quarter saw the pace increase further with both teams finding the hoop more often. Again, controlling our boards was a significant problem Ð by half time, CBU had out rebounded us 21 Ð 11, leading to numerous second-chance points. While we increased our second quarter scoring to 19 points, CBU racked up 29 to take a commanding 48-27 half-time lead. Second year guard/forward, Alaina Porter (Burlington, ON) scored almost half of Queen's points with 13, on 6-7 from the floor and 1-3 from the line.

A brutal start to the third quarter saw CBU open a 30+ point chasm, effectively putting their game on cruise control. We managed only 10 points in the quarter while surrendering 22. The fourth quarter saw significant improvement in our execution and a greater effort on the boards. Rookie, Richelle Gaudet (Kingston, ON) provided a much needed spark to our offense, as she pumped in 14 second half points to finish the game with 18 on 9-11 from the floor. She was named ÒPlayer of the GameÓ for Q's. Second year guard, Brittany Moore also stepped up her game, dropping 13 second half points to finish with 17. Third year post player Erin Skippon finished with 10 points and 5 boards. Overall we scored 25 in the fourth, while surrendering 12 to finish with an 82-62 loss.
