Solid third quarter enough to propel Gaels to 73-67 win over Rams
By Dave Wilson
There were some eerie similarities to this game and our previous night's loss to Toronto. Four minutes into the game we found ourselves down double digits, having only managed 4 points. Like the night before, we began very tentatively, allowing Ryerson's pressure to intimidate us into making poor decisions. We were fortunate to recover somewhat late in the quarter and only trailed by 5, 21-16 after the first stanza. The second quarter did not begin well either as we slipped into another double digit deficit, before regaining our composure finishing the quarter with an 11-2 run, outscoring Ryerson 17-16 in the quarter to trail 37-33 at the break. We started the third quarter very well, holding Ryerson to just 2 points in the first 6 minutes, while erasing our deficit and building our first lead of the game. We finished the quarter with a 6 point lead after outscoring Ryerson 21-11. We extended that lead in the fourth quarter as the Rams continued to struggle with their perimeter shooting... until the four minute mark. Back to back 3s put Ryerson right back in the thick of things, eventually tying the game at 65. A strong finish to the game allowed us to outscore them 8-2 in the final 3 minutes for the win. Excellent foul shooting down the stretch was key as we shot 18-20 from the line in the game. Four players hit double digits in scoring, while Anne Murphy (Milford, ON) had her double digit in rebounding with 10. Brittany Moore (Hannon, ON) dropped a team high 18 points on 3 of 8 from behind the three point line, with Kendra Walker-Roche (Brockville, ON) keeping pace with 3 threes of her own (on 6 attempts) to notch 11 points. Alaina Porter (Burlington, ON) continued her fine play with 16 points and 7 boards, while Jill Wheat finished one rebound shy of a double double with 10 points and 9 grabs off the glass.
