Mustangs out of the gate early to defeat Gaels
Queen's 49, Western 60
By Dave Wilson
After a dismal weekend a week ago, all I can say is that we were better - not good enough, but better. We did, however, get off to a horrendous start against Western and found ourselves trailing 10 nothing before calling an early time out. We went on a 5-0 run of our own and then traded baskets for the rest of the quarter, trailing 16-11 after one. The game settled into a see-saw battle for the next two quarters - we had success getting the ball inside to the posts, while Western had a mix of inside and outside scoring. Each team scored 11 points in the second quarter and 16 in the third quarter. We started the fourth quarter well and for a brief moment captured a one point lead. Western scored on their next possession and that was the end of it. Despite out-rebounding Western in the first half, we were completely dominated on the boards in the second half, leading to second chance points for the Stangs. Ultimately, this was our downfall, as Western pulled away to the 11 point win.
Anne Murphy was our leading scorer with 15 points and 6 rebounds - the only Q's player to hit double figures.
