Poor first and fourth quarters plague Gaels - U of T 75, Queen's 71
By Dave Wilson
In what can only be described as a dismal start to the game, we found ourselves unable to execute the simplest of skills - basic passing and catching - leading to a very quick double digit deficit in the opening quarter. By the end of 10 minutes we were trailing 19-11. Toronto exerted a fair amount of pressure throughout the half, but it wasn't until midway through the second stanza that we began to show a little aggression of our own. Despite committing 16 turnovers in the half, we managed to outscore Toronto 22-20 in the second quarter to leave us down 6, 39-33. Given that we had played so poorly, we were confident as a team that we could turn things around in the second half. And in the third quarter, that is exactly what we did. We reduced our first half turnovers from 16 down to 1. We stepped up our defense and limited U of T to 13 points. We took care of the ball, controlled the boards, and were aggressive going to the hoop, dropping 24 points. We had turned an early game double digit deficit into a 5 point lead, 57-52 heading into the fourth quarter. But then the execution began to slip. We did not control our own boards, leading to many second chance points for Toronto. We did not handle the ball as well, committing another 4 turnovers in the quarter. Consequently we only managed 14 fourth quarter points while surrendering 23... and the game.
Brittany Moore (Hannon, ON) led all scorers with 23 points, including 5-9 from behind the arc. Alaina Porter (Burlington, ON) recorded a double double with 19 points and 10 rebounds, while Anne Murphy (Milford, ON) added 12 points and 6 boards.
