Second quarter costs Queen's the game
Queen's 70, Guelph 75

By Dave Wilson

After the dismal performance the night before, we showed signs of improvement on Saturday. At least we did a much better job of taking care of the basketball, although that was offset by poorer shooting. In any case we led 16-15 after the first frame. In the second quarter, defensive execution fell apart, allowing Guelph to rack up 22 points to our 12. Regrouping at the half, we managed 19 point in the third to Guelph's 18. After going down 10 points early in the fourth quarter, we could only manage to get half of that back, finishing the quarter with 23 points to Guelph's 20. In retrospect, a 20 second shot clock (instead of 24 sec.) would have helped us immensely. Time and again we seemed to play excellent defense for close to 20 seconds, before breaking down and giving up a good look. It will be a heavy focus in practice this week for sure. Anne Murphy led the Gaels in scoring, dropping 14 points, while Sarah Barnes returned to her scoring form in the second half contributing 13 points, as did Christine Wallace.
