by Queen's University Sports information Office

The Queen's Golden Gaels clinched fourth place and a playoff position in the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) East division with a narrow 68-66 victory over the Ottawa Gee Gees on Friday night.

Brittany Moore of Hannon, Ont. led the Gaels with a team high 16 points while veteran Sarah Barnes of St. Catharines, Ont. contributed 11 points.

The opening quarter saw the visiting Gaels open up a large lead by putting up 15 points compared to the Gee Gees 6. Ottawa tightened the game in the second quarter, but the Gaels continued to lead 30-21 at the half.

Queen's kept up the offensive pressure in the third-quarter by outscoring their opponents 22-19 and held a 12 point lead heading into the final frame (52-40). In the fourth, the Gaels started to struggle on the defensive side of the ball giving up 26 points while scoring only 16 which saw Ottawa make the game much closer. Queen's managed to hold off the comeback and earned a slim victory and a ticket to the playoffs.

On the other side of the court, Ottawa was led by Hannah Sunley-Paisly of Toronto who recorded 17 points, while Melina Wishart of Ottawa, Ont. added 12 of her own.

Queen's will close the regular season on Saturday with the Gaels taking on the Carleton Ravens in Ottawa, with the game starting at 6:00pm. The Gaels currently have a 9-12 record and cannot move up or down in the standings. With the win, the Gaels clinch a home-playoff matchup which will be played on Saturday, February 16 (Time TBA).
