Last quarter surge leads to win over Concordia
Queen's 77, Concordia 69

By Dave Wilson

I don't know... I thought you might be asking how we can put up 77 points against a talented team like Concordia, when our execution was so poor the night before. Credit the players - they must have given the game a great deal of thought, because they were a very different team on Sunday, than the previous day. We got off to a slow start surrendering hoops on Concordia's first four possessions, while turning the ball over twice in our first four possessions. After that, however, we settled down and began to play solid basketball. We managed to capture the lead late in the first, finishing with a 23-22 point first quarter lead. The shooting pace slowed a little in the second and we extended our lead to 3 at the half, 40-37. Overall, we shot almost 49% from the floor, a significant improvement from the previous day. Amanda Northcott led our team in scoring with 10 points on 4 of 6 shooting.

We struggled in the third quarter, scoring 16, but giving up 21 to trail 58-56 heading into the fourth quarter. The first 4 minutes of the fourth quarter saw our deficit grow to 8 points before a series of defensive stands, followed by a couple of transition baskets brought us back to tie and eventually grab the lead. With 3 minutes to go we had opened up a 6 point lead that we would not relinquish. We outscored Concordia 21-11 in the final frame to finish with the 77-69 win. Five players hit double figures: Anne Murphy with 16 (and 13 boards for another double-double), Maddie Soye and Northcott with 12, and Jaime Dale and Christine Wallace with 10. We finally won a battle on the boards, out-rebounding the Stingers 44-37.
