Queen's wins close one against "Old Four" sister
Queen's 71 McGill 65
By Dave Wilson
Unlike our previous two games, we started scoring off the opening tip-off in this game. Unfortunately, we had difficulty keeping McGill off the scoreboard as well. By the end of 10 minutes we were ahead 23-16. McGill turned the tables on us in the second quarter scoring 19 to our 13 and we heading into the locker room up 36-35. Brittany Moore (Hannon, ON) led all scorers with 10 points, while Erin Skippon (Kelowna, BC) grabbed 7 rebounds.
We opened the third quarter well, only to have the Martletts close the gap. We were never able to gain more than a 7 point lead, but found ourselves up 4 at the quarter, 51-47. McGill kept executing their pick and roll offense and eventually grabbed the lead late in the fourth. With less than 1 minute to play and McGill up one, Moore came off a screen and nailed one of her 4 three-pointers for the game to restore the Queen's lead. Solid defense shut down any further scoring by McGill. Maddie Soye (Kitchener, ON) and Alaina Porter (Burlington, ON) each added a couple of clutch free throws in the final seconds to seal a 6 point win, 71-65. Moore finished with 22 points, while Kendra Walker-Roche (Brockville, ON) converted on 3 of 7 from behind the arc to add 15 points. Porter finished with 10 points, while Skippon hit double digits with 10 boards.
