Gaels 57, Toledo 81
By Dave Wilson
Not used to writing game reports at this time of the year. With a very good 4-day training camp under our belts, I was expecting a pretty solid performance from our team against Toledo. Such was not exactly the case. At times we looked OK, but at times we looked awful. Toledo used a couple of big bodies inside to score early. We answered with 3-point shots from Sarah Barnes, Jess Selinger and Jaime Dale. Turnovers led to our early downfall as Toledo grabbed a 27-16 lead at the end of the first quarter. The second quarter was much the same -- spurts of turnovers led to easy scores for Toledo, who extended their lead to 43-27 at the half. In the third quarter we tightened our defense a little bit and did a better job of taking care of the ball. We continued to struggle on the boards, however, and trailed by 17 heading into the fourth (43-60). Toledo outscored us 21-17 in the fourth to coast to an 81-57 victory.
We played all 10 players in the game (Lyndsey Gauley and Erin Skippon were sidelined with injuries), including the 3 rookies, Brittany Moore, Alaina Porter and Christine Wallace. Each showed why they were highly recruited -- plenty of potential with these three. Selinger picked up where she left off last season -- 19 points (perfect from the foul line) to lead all scorers with only 22 minutes of play. Moore finished with 8 points, all in the fourth quarter.
Our next game is on Homecoming Weekend, Saturday, October 13 at 11:00am vs Ste. Foy (a CEGEP from Quebec City). As a side note, one of Ste. Foy's players, played on our FISU team this summer in Thailand..
